Message from Your Regent – Summer 2022

Greetings!

I hope everyone had a great summer and that you were able to prioritize some self-care and work-life balance. With the challenges and stresses we all face on a daily basis, I know it’s difficult to focus on your own wellbeing. ACHE has some great resources and educational offerings on resiliency.

“Challenges and Stresses” might seem like an understatement at times for some of you. Just a couple weeks ago, Fitch Ratings revised its sector outlook for US Not-For-Profit Hospitals and Health Systems from ‘neutral’ to ‘deteriorating’, citing more severe-than-expected macro headwinds of labor pressure and high inflation. Unfortunately, Iowa is not immune to these challenges.

In addressing these issues, I believe leadership and innovation are the characteristics and competencies that will be the difference maker. The current trajectory for our healthcare industry is not sustainable and it will take leadership and courage to chart a new course for our organizations. It may require innovative, new care models or new approaches to problem solving. The health needs of our patients and communities are evolving and our approach to meet those needs must evolve too.

Continuing to stay engaged and committed to lifelong learning will undoubtedly assist you in honing your leadership skills and driving innovation through curiosity. ACHE of Iowa has some exciting opportunities coming up this fall to learn and connect. We are again partnering with the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) to offer Face-to-Face education credits at this year’s IHA annual meeting on October 4 and 5. Additionally, we will have our ACHE of Iowa Annual Breakfast Meeting on Wednesday, October 5 prior to the Wednesday IHA opening session. Please see below for details. If you are not able to make it to either in-person offerings, I’d recommend the upcoming virtual Face-to-Face ACHE educational opportunities (also listed below).

I’d like to put an extra emphasis on Virtual Board of Governors review course. If you’ve been thinking about starting your journey to Board Certification in Healthcare Management, now is the perfect time. Whether enrolling in one of the virtual board of governor exam review courses or connecting with ACHE of Iowa chapter leaders to help form a study group, there are resources to help you along your journey.

Please continue to share with me your feedback and suggestions on how ACHE can improve your member experience. I look forward to seeing many of you in October.
